Vidanga means something that has not been chiseled out.Chola king Muthukunda chakravarthi,helped Indra and brought seven emerlad(vidanga) lingams to earth and installed them at various places in his kingdom.

Little is known about an ancient tradition that exists in the Thanjavur area of Tamilnadu in the form of seven majestic temples enshrining Tyagaraja, the Somaskanda manifestation of Shiva. The foremost of these is at the historic Tiruvarur temple. The festival season in the month of Panguni witnesses the procession of the (now modernized) Aazhitter in Tiruvarur - yet another instance of the ancient coexisting with the modern in India.
