India is building its first native Sanskrit LLM in Chennai.
A 118-year-old Sanskrit institution has partnered with IIT Madras to build India’s first native Sanskrit Large Language Model. It brings together centuries of tradition and modern AI in a way we rarely see.
With access to over 110,000 ancient texts and rare manuscripts, this project is turning cultural heritage into structured data that machines can understand. In fact, more than 1,000 Sanskrit books were converted into editable text in less than 24 hours using in house technology.
Sanskrit was built on logic, structure and precision long before algorithms existed. Training AI on such a language is not nostalgia, it is intelligent design.
If our own knowledge systems are not part of modern technology, they slowly fade from relevance. This effort ensures that history and culture move forward with tech, not behind it.
And that makes this step from Chennai truly meaningful.
