Sri Bangaru Kamakshi Amman Temple Tanjore, Tamil Nadu, India

This is a small temple situated in the heart of Tanjore. The Idol of Sri Kamakshi is very small made of pure gold and hence known as Sri Bangaru Kamakshi (Bangaru means Gold in Telugu). Originally this idol was in the town of Kancheepuram and when the Muslim rulers from north invaded South India, fearing that this Idol may be stolen by them it was taken to Tanjavur for safe custody. However the people of Tanjavur refused to return the Idol to Kancheepuram and instead they built a temple for the goddess. Presently the idol is covered with black powder not to reveal the gold inside and for safety.
