Sri Chakrapani Temple Kumbakonam, Tanjore, Tamil Nadu, India

This temple is situated on the out skirts of Kumbakonam town, the main idol is Sri Chakra, one of the five weapons of Sri Mahe Vishnu, the other four being Shanku, Gadha, Kadga and Saranga (Bow). Sri Maha Vishnu is supposed to carry the first four weapons in his four hands and the bow on his shoulder, in this temple a Sri Maha Vishnu idol is also installed but the importance is for the Chakra which contains 365 spokes representing the 365 days in a year. The moving wheel is the Sri Kale Chakra. It always moves forward. The image of Sri Chakrapani in this temple has eight right arms. The name of the goddess is Sri Sudeeshana Valli Thayaar. Sri Brahma, Sri Vishnu, Sri Surya and Sri Agni are depicted as worshipping this Lord. In this telple Lord Sri Chakrapani has a third eye in his forehead just like Lord Sri Shiva.

According to the legend Sri Surya once competed with Sri Vishnu to see who was brighter. Lord Sri Vishnu appeared in the form of Sri Sudharshana Chakra and put down the pride of Sri Surya.
