This temple is located on the road between Thiruvaiyyaru and Kumbakonam. The Moolavar is known as Sri Gajendravaradhan and is in a reclining pose facing east and the Thaayar is Sri Ramamani Valli.

The legend says that a Pandya King named Sri lndra Dhuman, who was a great Sri Vishnu Bhakta, was involved in his prayers. It was his practice not to see anyone during his prayers; once Sage Durvasa came to meet him during the King's prayers, but could not get an audience. Durvasa cursed the king to become an elephant. The king was reborn as an elephant but even in this birth his bakthi for Lord Sri Vishnu did not reduce. He was known as Sri Gajendra; once while he was bathing in a forest lake a crocodile caught hold of his leg and he could not free himself. He appealed to the Lord for rescue, and Lord Sri Vishnu came in his Garuda Vahanam and using his Chakrayudha killed the crocodile. The crocodile was named as Huhu who was a Gandharva in his earlier birth, but became a crocodile due to a curse. At this place Lord Sri Vishnu gave Darshan and Mukthi for the two animals. Out of the 108 Divya Deshams this is the only place where two animals got darshan and attained Mukthi.
