The historical suit regarding the Tatanga Pratishta (the sacred ear-ornament consecration ritual) at the Jambukeswaram (Tiruvanaikaval) temple in Trichy was Original Suit No. 95 of 1844.

Case File Details

Case File Number: Original Suit No. 95 of 1844 (O.S. 95/1844).

Trial Court: Civil Court / District Court in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy).

Parties Involved: Filed on behalf of the Sringeri Matha (plaintiff) against the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham (defendant) regarding the exclusive traditional rights and honors to perform the Tatanga Pratishta at the Sri Akhilandeshwari Jambukeswaram Temple.

The initial litigation took 2 years at the trial court level (from 1844 to 1846), after which it entered a multi-tier appellate process extending the total legal duration to 4 years (1844–1848):

Trial Court: Filed in 1844 and dismissed with costs in 1846 (Running time: 2 Years).

Appeals: Finalized in 1848 when the Special Appeal was disallowed.

At the time of this litigation (1840s), neither the modern High Courts (established under the High Courts Act of 1861) nor the Supreme Court of India existed. Instead, the appellate system operated under British India's Presidency Court framework:

First Appeal: Filed as Appeal No. 109 of 1846 to the higher Zilla Appellate Court.

Second Appeal: Filed as Special Appeal Petition No. 106 of 1848 to the Sadr Adawlat Court (the highest appellate court in the Madras Presidency prior to the establishment of the Madras High Court).

In both the primary trial court and subsequent appellate proceedings, the claims were disallowed and dismissed with costs, upholding the right of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham to perform the Tatanga Pratishta ceremony. The consecration was subsequently performed by the Acharyas of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham in 1844, and in later years (such as 1923 by Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal).
