With the blessings of Pujyasri Jagadguru Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya Swamigal of Moolamnaya Sarvagnya Sri kanchi kamakoti Peetham, over fifty children presented a natakam on Thiruvilayadal - 64 Leelas of Siva Peruman in Madurai.

Thiruvilayadal was presented in English as part of Itihaasa - A Natakam and Samskriti Camp’s 10th year production. Itihaasa, a project of Kalainirai Foundation USA, has been an annual summer camp in the Seattle area since 2014, focusing on educating the next generation about Bharat’s itihaasa, traditions and heritage through stage productions. Proceeds from the camp support Sankara Healthcare Foundation (www.giftofhealth.us) ,  Kalavai Guru Parampara Veda Vidya Trust’s pathashalas, devalayam maintenance and other dharmic kainkaryams.

Twenty children between the ages eight and fifteen, rehearsed and acted in over fifty roles, quickly changing between scenes. A team of children learned and sang over half a dozen theverams and other songs for the natakam. Another team of young adults choreographed and performed nrityam for some of the songs. Several local nrutyam teachers choreographed some of the dances for their students to perform in the natakam. A vibrant team of ten high school students helped throughout the two-week camp to train actors, make props and manage the stage during the performance.

Itihaasa’s past productions include Shakuntala, Krishna-Sudama, Chatrapati Shivaji, Lachit Borphukan, Jumbo Shiva Shambo - sthala puranam of Thiruvanakaval and Valmiki Ramayanam.
