In Maitrīm Bhajata, Mahā Periyavā emphasizes the importance of friendship first. Second, He says that we should look upon others as ourselves. We should renounce wars and avoid unhealthy forms of competition. Bhūma Devī grants us everything. Bhagavān is compassionate to all. We must be responsible, offer dāna, and live with dayā (compassion). What do we gain from all this? As stated in the verse, it leads to श्रेयो भूयात् सकलजनानाम् ॥(śreyo bhūyāt sakalajanānām ॥— May all people be happy and prosperous). When such a noble environment exists, it generates śreyas. Śreyas refers to the highest good, the lasting good that remains at all times. Good that lasts only for a short while is called preyas. Preyas is a small, temporary form of good. Śreyas, on the other hand, is long‑lasting, enduring, and beneficial across paramparās. Śreyas is not something that lasts only for a short time, temporarily, or tatkāl (in the present moment), but endures permanently and should be experienced by all people—सकलजनानाम् भूयात् (sakalajanānām bhūyāt). First, there are external sufferings, such as ill health and lack of material wealth. Then there are inner sufferings, such as fear, doubt, and worries. All of these vanish when one sees a sādhu. For instance, why do people sit quietly in Periyavā's adhiṣṭhānam for half an hour or an hour, without speaking? Periyavā converses in a mānasika (mental) form with the bhaktās. He communicates with the bhaktās in a mānasika way. The bhaktās gain tṛpti in their manas. Thus, ānmīgam confers manas tṛpti. At every point in time, noble people are born. As Tyāgarāja Svāmigal sang in ఎందరో మహానుభావులు (Endarō Mahānubhāvulu - Great persons with extraordinary jñana, who have lived in all ages), in every era someone takes birth to inspire people, to strengthen their faith in dharmā, sevā, and virtuous conduct, and to share with them the śakti that Bhagavān has bestowed upon them. Instead of keeping that śakti locked away for themselves, like storing it in a locker and using it to get darśan of Arunācaleśvara, they held the attitude that the joy I have received must be shared with others. Even if I experience suffering, let others experience happiness. Thus, one of their ideals was that யான் பெற்ற இன்பம் இந்த வையகம் பெற வேண்டும் (Yān petra inbam indha vaiyakam pera vendum— Let the world gain the same bliss that I have experienced). Second, even if I undergo hardship, lack comfort, bear difficulties, let the people be well. With this spirit, they engaged in mauna, dhyāna, japa, and tapas, and benefited the loka through the strength of their tapas. Therefore, we must revere the nobles. The supreme and foremost āptar (trustworthy authority) in this loka is Īśvara Himself. If we interact with someone for five or ten years and know them well, we begin to appreciate their words deeply and trust them. We believe that what they say is for our good and hitam (benefits), and in many instances, this proves true. But if we have to name a friend who never misleads us under any circumstance, it is Īśvara. It is because He has no svārtham (self-interest). Secondly, He possesses trikāla jñāna (knowledge of past, present, and future). He has all the śakti (power). We say षण्णां भग इतीरणा (Ṣaṇṇāṃ bhaga itīraṇā — these six qualities are known as bhaga). Bhagavān refers to the One who possesses these six kinds of śakti. ऐश्वर्यस्य समग्रस्य धर्मस्य यशसः श्रियः । ज्ञानवैराग्ययोश्चैव षण्णां भग इतीरणा ॥ (aiśvaryasya samagrasya dharmasya yaśasaḥ śriyaḥ | jñānavairāgyayoścaiva ṣaṇṇāṃ bhaga itīraṇā —These six are called bhaga: aiśvarya, Dharma, yaśas (fame), śrī, jñāna and vairāgya). These six are called bhaga, including aiśvarya, jñāna, and vairāgya. Since He possesses all of these, He is called Bhagavān. He who possesses bhaga is Bhagavān, just as we say dharmavān or satyavān. In the context of bhaga, we can say He possesses these six forms of aiśvarya. He is the owner of Dharma. धर्मस्य यशसः (Dharmasya yaśasaḥ), यश — yaśas means fame, and if we ask who is worthy of fame, it is Svāmi. It is Svāmi who has all the aiśvarya and jñāna. He is the ocean of knowledge, an ocean not bitter but sweet, an ocean of jñāna. Regarding vairāgya, all the qualities we speak of as शमदमादि साधन सम्पत् (śamadamādi sādhana sampat— the six virtues for controlling the mind and senses), He possesses them all.
