Writing about history in a book is one aspect; However, there is an aspect of history that we must follow. To ensure that practices such as performing japa, going to temples, and observing upavāsam do not remain confined to books, but become part of our ācāra and daily customs, and for Dharmā to flourish, they both engaged in continuous efforts. To encourage people, they offered silver coins, gold coins, and awards to motivate them in every way possible to participate; Even though offering āśīrvāda and mārga‑darśanam (guidance) would have been enough, by offering titles, presenting shawls, and assigning responsibilities, both Periyavās inspired people, accomplishing remarkable work over the past hundred years. वागर्थाविव सम्पृक्तौ वागर्थप्रतिपत्तये। जगतः पितरौ वन्दे पार्वतीपरमेश्वरौ || (vāgarthāviva sampṛktau vāgarthapratipattaye | jagataḥ pitarau vande pārvatīparameśvarau || परस्पर-तपः-सम्पत्-फलायित-परस्परौ। प्रपञ्च-माता-पितरौ प्राञ्चौ जाया-पती स्तुमः॥ paraspara-tapaḥ-sampat-phalāyita-parasparau| prapañca-mātā-pitarau prāñcau jāyā-patī stumaḥ|| Pārvatī and Parameśvara reign as the Ādi Dampati. They united through intense tapas. Parameśvara, who grants the fruits of tapas to everyone, performed tapas in the Himalayas. तत्राग्निमाधाय समित्समिद्धं स्वमेव मूर्त्यन्तरमष्टमूर्तिः ।(tatrāgnimādhāya samitsamiddhaṃ svameva mūrtyantaramaṣṭamūrtiḥ ।) स्वयं विधाता तपसः फलानां केनापि कामेन तपश्चचार ॥ (svayaṃ vidhātā tapasaḥ phalānāṃ kenāpi kāmena tapaścacāra ॥) —There, having kindled the sacred fire with blazing fuel, the Lord—who manifests as the eight forms of nature, the very giver of the fruits of all austerities—performed tapas with a certain divine purpose) svayaṃ vidhātā tapasaḥ phalānām —The One who bestows the results of all tapas sat in the Himalayas performing tapas. That is one side. On the other side, Pārvatī Devī too performed tapas. Was it ordinary tapas? It was not merely eating once a day, or fasting for a day, or drinking only water. Going far beyond all that, She performed pañcāgni tapas, standing on one leg. When we look at the form of Kāmākṣī in the garbhagṛha, we see Her standing on one leg, the other folded, performing pañcāgni tapas, surrounded by four fires and facing the sun above in this tapas‑mudrā. Mahā Periyavā has performed such tapas. Assuming the state of a tapasvī, though born a royal princess with every comfort and privilege, She performed such intense tapas that She came to be known as Aparṇā, the one who would not even eat leaves. Parṇa means leaves and foliage; She gave up even that and performed tapas, performing a tatēkadhyāna (single‑pointed meditation) on Parameśvara. In Maitrīm Bhajata, Mahā Periyavā emphasizes the importance of friendship first. Second, He says that we should look upon others as ourselves. We should renounce wars and avoid unhealthy forms of competition. Bhūma Devī grants us everything. Bhagavān is compassionate to all. We must be responsible, offer dāna, and live with dayā (compassion). What do we gain from all this? As stated in the verse, it leads to श्रेयो भूयात् सकलजनानाम् ॥(śreyo bhūyāt sakalajanānām ॥— May all people be happy and prosperous). When such a noble environment exists, it generates śreyas. Śreyas refers to the highest good, the lasting good that remains at all times. Good that lasts only for a short while is called preyas. Preyas is a small, temporary form of good. Śreyas, on the other hand, is long‑lasting, enduring, and beneficial across paramparās. Śreyas is not something that lasts only for a short time, temporarily, or tatkāl (in the present moment), but endures permanently and should be experienced by all people—सकलजनानाम् भूयात् (sakalajanānām bhūyāt). Mahā Periyavā wrote this message in Saṃskṛtam, and M. S. Subbulakshmi sang this composition at the United Nations, arranged by the official Narasimhan. First, there are external sufferings, such as ill health and lack of material wealth. Then there are inner sufferings, such as fear, doubt, and worries. All of these vanish when one sees a sādhu. For instance, why do people sit quietly in Periyavā's adhiṣṭhānam for half an hour or an hour, without speaking? Periyavā converses in a mānasika (mental) form with the bhaktās. He communicates with the bhaktās in a mānasika way. The bhaktās gain tṛpti in their manas. Thus, ānmīgam confers manas tṛpti. At every point in time, noble people are born. As Tyāgarāja Svāmigal sang in ఎందరో మహానుభావులు (Endarō Mahānubhāvulu - Great persons with extraordinary jñana, who have lived in all ages), in every era someone takes birth to inspire people, to strengthen their faith in dharmā, sevā, and virtuous conduct, and to share with them the śakti that Bhagavān has bestowed upon them. Instead of keeping that śakti locked away for themselves, like storing it in a locker and using it to get darśan of Arunācaleśvara, they held the attitude that the joy I have received must be shared with others. Even if I experience suffering, let others experience happiness. Thus, one of their ideals was that யான் பெற்ற இன்பம் இந்த வையகம் பெற வேண்டும் (Yān petra inbam indha vaiyakam pera vendum— Let the world gain the same bliss that I have experienced). Second, even if I undergo hardship, lack comfort, bear difficulties, let the people be well. With this spirit, they engaged in mauna, dhyāna, japa, and tapas, and benefited the loka through the strength of their tapas. Therefore, we must revere the nobles.
