The story behind Thumba ERLS by Kalam sir.
The Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS), located near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, is India’s first rocket launching station. Established on November 21, 1963, it serves as the birthplace of India's space program and is currently operated by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) under ISRO.
Location: Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala (close to Earth's magnetic equator). Significance: Chosen because its proximity to the magnetic equator makes it an ideal site for conducting upper atmospheric and meteorological research using sounding rockets.
Humble Beginnings: The local St. Mary Magdalene Church bishop's house served as the first office for the scientists, and the church building housed the initial rocket equipment. Museum exhibits: The historic church now functions as a Space Museum, showcasing the evolution of Indian rocketry, scale models, and vintage equipment.
